Ruth Chapter 3

And Naomi her mother-in-law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?
2 And now is not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor.
3 Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the threshing-floor, but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.
5 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest I will do.
6 And she went down unto the threshing-floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law bade her.
7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.
9 And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thy handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.
10 And he said, Blessed be thou of Jehovah, my daughter: thou hast showed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.
11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou sayest; for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a worthy woman.
12 And now it is true that I am a near kinsman; howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.
13 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as Jehovah liveth: lie down until the morning.
14 And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.
15 And he said, Bring the mantle that is upon thee, and hold it; and she held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and [f]he went into the city.
16 And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.
17 And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he [h]said, Go not empty unto thy mother-in-law.
18 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall; for the man will not rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

The first five verses of chapter 3 talk about a custom that we know very little about. Naomi wants Ruth to let Boaz know that she is interested in him. This is the part of the Mosaic Law that deals with this custom:

Deuteronomy 25:5-9 ASV

5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no son, the wife of the dead shall not be married without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her.
6 And it shall be, that the first-born that she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother that is dead, that his name be not blotted out of Israel.
7 And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto me.
8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand, and say, I like not to take her;
9 then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face; and she shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto the man that doth not build up his brother’s house.

The book of Ruth is the only book of the Bible that gives a demonstration of this law and it is a very unusual law.
I'm sure this law made all of the brother's very interested in a girl that one of them may be interested in because if anything happened to their brother one of them would be the kinsman redeemer and would marry her to carry on his brother's name. This was God's way to protect and have the woman taken care of and also to protect the land that the family owned.
Ruth is a widow without any children and to be able to keep the family land of her deceased husband she would have to be redeemed by a kinsman redeemer.
Boaz is a close relative but we will find out that he is not the closest relative and I find it interesting to know that Boaz had already checked all of that out.
I think that Naomi had probably been watching Ruth and Boaz and could see that Boaz was interested in Ruth. Naomi told Ruth to go to Boaz when he was sleeping on the threshing floor and told her what she needed to do to let Boaz know that she was interested and that he was a kinsman redeemer.
It was at the end of the season after everyone celebrated the feast, all of the men would lie down and put their heads toward the grain and their feet would stick out like spokes on a wheel.
This would protect the grain from being stolen while they were sleeping.
Naomi told Ruth to go during the night and uncover Boaz's feet and to lay down next to him.
Boaz woke up in the middle of the night and Ruth asked him to spread a corner of his garment over his since he was a kinsman redeemer.
Boaz tells her to stay the night because it was not safe to travel at night during the time of the judges.
When she was leaving Boaz had her open up her shawl and he gave her a very generous gift of barley.
She returned to Naomi and showed her his gift and told her what he had said to her.
Naomi told her to sit back and wait because Boaz would take care of everything.
This is a wonderful story in the Bible of what God does for us when He redeems us. All we have to do is accept God as our Lord and Savior and ask Him to forgive us of our sins and then we are part of His family and will always be a child of God.
We need to have a personal daily relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and not just a Sunday morning relationship.

Things to Think About:

1) Look up kinsman redeemer and see if you think that Boaz wa a type of Christ?

2) Think about Ruth's character and how we can apply what we learned from her in the past three chapters and apply it to our own life.
